Lia Hietala

In the video installation To Give One’s Body, Hietala examines environments, people and historical symbols linked to Swedish military defense. Försvarsmakten, Swedish military, have begun to advertise towards young girls as a way to maintain their place in Swedish society. Hietala takes a closer look at what it means for a girl to become a soldier and, by extension, go from object to subject.

Lia Hietala, born in 1993 in Stockholm, Sweden, is an artist and filmmaker. Her practice is often based on archives, images, text, montage, documentary traditions, and installation. Thematically, it revolves around violence, gender, sexuality, and class.
