Bind: An armchair for Stockholm’s common livingroom
Emilia Aarna

Today, large amounts of furniture are discarded annually in the business and public sectors. Upholstered furniture often consists of several materials that are difficult to disassemble for repair and recycling. If furniture were easier to maintain, repair and adapt to different environments, it would have a longer life, significantly reducing the environmental impact.

In my degree project, I have explored how to design comfortable seating furniture for public spaces that can be produced and maintained sustainably. This is particularly important in environments where furniture wears out at a high rate, repair is currently neglected, and furniture is left to decay. In my degree project, I have worked site-specifically with Stockholms Stadsbibliotek, but designed with the idea that it can fit into several different environments. This degree project is a call for companies and municipalities to switch to a more circular way of using furniture.
