I’m intrigued by the difference between owning an object and owning your identity— what it is to be mirrored by a physical object, something with a tangible presence when identity feels slippery and volatile. I enjoy mixing contemporary and historical symbols and ornaments to convey how your heritage affects the present.
My degree project is based on creating a modular system for making a candlestick that will tell your personal history: past, present, and future — a modular object as an invitation to introspection. As a demarcation, I use traditional materials, such as bronze and brass. Beyond this, I will incorporate contemporary or somehow misplaced symbols and techniques to create tension between traditional and contemporary identity markers.
