My degree project is about spatial transitions. By highlighting methods showing how new spaces respond to existing architecture from other times, I hope we can better preserve existing buildings and develop new spaces with a greater connection to their site, time, history, and context.
I use the method of mimesis, imitating the experience and identity of two rooms from different times. The rooms are two separate stairwells at Katedralskolan in Uppsala, built in 1869 and 1963. With sand casting and charcoal on kraft paper, I transform the stairwells features, character, experience, and care. What can translations teach me about spaces from other times, the present, and what we long for?
By designing spaces that respond to our history and our time, I hope to contribute to our feeling of spatial context, identity, and care.
