Lovisa Norrby
In my degree project, I am inspired by memories, local places, and identity to activate historical objects and use history as local DNA in furniture design. The degree project’s continuous narrative examines and tells my grandfather’s story from a nostalgic and critical point of view related to the subject of craft and design. The vision is to take advantage of architectural qualities and craft techniques in existing objects manufactured by my grandfather to develop, strengthen and translate the qualities into a new design language with the intention of sustainable design. Materiality and memories are important to illuminate history and craftsmanship. The design proposal results in a furniture series highlighting how to use local materials and historical craft techniques and how the design can be adapted to the material. The furniture is a tribute to my grandfather, inspired by Gotland’s craft and material history.
