The Singing Square
Rebecka Arborelius

Identity, meetings and function at Bredäng square.

In her book “Every Room Should Sing”, interior designer Beata Heuman describes her techniques for incorporating personality and playfulness into the home. Her goal is to get every room to sing. In my degree project, I take these techniques as a starting point, but apply them instead to a public outdoor environment – The Singing Square.

The design of public environments today often lacks a connection to the location. Colours do not always correlate well with the surroundings, and the placement of furniture often lacks a deeper consideration of how the place should be used. The Bredäng Square in Stockholm is filled every day with colourful, interesting people. I want to create a square environment that reflects these individuals and functions as a natural meeting place for them.

In my proposal, I add carefully chosen colours, shapes and features in a harmonious contrast to the existing architecture in Bredäng. I thereby create an inviting square that encourages encounters and longer stays at the location.
