Calango Do Cerrado
Carolina Weigl

My degree project examines whether designing a bench through the use of production techniques in three dimensions can create a softer, warmer and more playful design experience. The work also investigates whether the shape of the bench inspires physical movement and presence of mind.

The Calango Do Cerrado bench has three seating levels designed for children and adults, as well as for the very smallest children, who can then climb up from floor level.

The design of the bench is inspired by a lizard (calango) from The Cerrado Savannah in Brazil, where I conducted my research.

Through this bench, I want to spread knowledge about an unprotected Cerrado. A key area for biodiversity that has fallen into the shadows. Only 3% of Cerrado is protected. The rest is open for exploitation by the Brazilian and global agricultural industry.

Among the most vulnerable species are the lizards that live in underground cavities. These cavities disappear when the ploughs clear through the fields.
