Plating the Baltic Sea
Louisa Juvall Molin

The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world. This affects its balance of biodiversity and creates an impact on the already sensitive marine environment.

The cultivation of algae could be one possible solution regarding the issues of eutrophication. Algae farming doesn’t need land, water or nutrients.  Using algae as the basis for my explorations, I am investigating how material can be produced from algae within different products connected to food.

In collaboration with Under ytan, a company cultivating algae locally on Åland, I have designed tableware made from and for algae-based food. Using the framework of the set table, I explore algae in a local context and reflect upon the usage of algae in marine restoration. The set table is full of symbols regarding culture, history, life and festivals. By gathering around the table, we share food, stories and create consciousness of the Baltic Sea.
