Commons Goods and Ephemeral Beauty
Anton Sander

I have set out to find beauty in the universal and the common, in the used and the unwanted. I give primary value to the materials and techniques that are perhaps not usually considered primary or desired in an interior context.

Considering recent global events that have interrupted trade, materials are scarce. Through this scarcity, we can heighten our awareness of where materials come from and become increasingly more flexible in our production. Openness in our choice of material can induce new expressions which challenge our aesthetic preferences. We can get used to alternatives, and see beauty in other places. This might be essential on our journey towards a more sustainable way of life.

My degree project looks back at pre-industrial furniture made in times of meagre resources, and inspired by their ingenuity and creativity a new strain of evolution, or perhaps rather mutation, emerges – artefacts that evoke reflection upon preferences, conventional production, the value of objects and beauty.
