Architechno: Translating Rhythm Into Room
Hanna Lidgren

Through practice-based exploration, my degree project explores and develops methods for how music can be used as a design tool. By analyzing perception of music, which components that are present and how the music is structured, rules can be created for the interior architect to relate to. Not as limitations, but as an interface that challenges traditional approaches and at the same time explores alternative design possibilities.

The degree project iterates between music theory, studies of subjective experiences and color, light and material exploration. The methods are applied to the phenomenon of the corridor, but is not limited to a spatial category. Based on perspectives of psychology and music theory, a piece of music is analyzed and translated into spatial design, with a focus on rhythm, light and color. The design proposal is a twelve meter long corridor made up of two layers with walls, light gaps and odd details.
